    Prime Minister, Ilunga Ilunkamba, Committee

For calendar reasons, the traditional meeting of economic conditions of every Tuesday gathered this Wednesday April 29 around the Prime Minister, Ilunga Ilunkamba, the members of the Committee including the VPM in charge of the Budget which, in its report to the press , said that the Governor of the Central Bank has been instructed to activate the mechanisms necessary to stabilize the exchange rate of the national currency which is fluctuating due to the gloomy world economy.

Jean Baudouin Mayo also said that the Democratic Republic of the Congo is not immune to the downward trend that characterizes the world economy today. This is mainly expressed in terms of exchange rate volatility, inflation and several other parameters. He reassured, however, that the Government was monitoring the situation very closely to contain the macroeconomic parameters within acceptable ranges.

In the DRC, the trough is not very deep, reports the Minister of the Budget who thinks that this situation should further motivate the government to make efforts to limit this upward trend in particular the exchange rate which has a lot of repercussions on the whole of the economy and the social life of citizens in terms of purchasing power.

As such, the governor of the Central Bank was instructed in order to involve the bank in the foreign exchange market, according to the methods it masters to stop the fall of the national currency. At the same time, the finance and budget ministers were instructed to contain spending in the same level of achievement as revenue.

At the next meeting, the members of the Economic Committee will assess the efforts that will be made. “It’s a very short-term challenge,” says Jean Baudouin Mayo.

During this meeting, the Minister of Mines presented the situation in his sector where production has been maintained, despite the reduction in imports.

Indeed, the mining companies have built up stocks, and this is what allows the country to have a level of production which guarantees an acceptable level of revenue, insofar as the exchange rate has not changed for the main materials that the DRC exports.

In addition to the Minister of Budget, the meeting of economic conditions on Wednesday saw the participation of the Minister of Planning, Elysée Munembwe, the Minister of Foreign Trade, Jean-Lucien Bussa, the Minister of Economy, Acacia Bandubola, the Minister des Mines, Willy Kitobo, the Vice-Ministers of Finance, Junior Mata M’elanga, as well as the Governor of the Central Bank, Déogratias Mutombo.

protection of the Lake Kivu ecosystem

A campaign to educate fishermen and shipowners on the standards of responsible fishing and the protection of the Lake Kivu ecosystem was launched this Friday, April 23, 2021 by the provincial coordination of the environment of South Kivu.

According to the head of the office in charge of nature conservation within this Bayubasire Bikaya coordination, this campaign will last one month, from April 23 to May 23, 2021.

He stressed that as part of this campaign, a surveillance system will be set up in Lake Kivu to ensure that fishermen respect the fear zones and floating cages.

Bayubasire Bikaya adds that the campaign also aims to limit the harassment suffered by fishermen in Lake Kivu and that they are not subject to the payment of illegal taxes from certain platforms of fishermen but also from certain elements of the security services.

Bikaya points out that in South Kivu 44 tracks spread across the territories of Kalehe, Idjwi, Kabare and the town of Bukavu are affected by this campaign. The activity is organized by the provincial coordination of the environment in partnership with the heads of fishermen’s associations working on Lake Kivu, according to our source.
